The Feralis Center, as the HR representative in the European Federation of Data Protection Officials (EFDPO), in collaboration with partners, organized the annual education for data protection officials called #DPOconference2022 on December 2nd, 2022, in the Bonavia hotel in Rijeka.
Marko Krečak, the director of Feralis Center, opened #DPOconference2022 with an introductory speech in which he greeted the attendees, guest speakers, panelists, and distinguished guests, and welcomed them to the event.
Following the opening remarks, Marko Filipović, the mayor of the City of Rijeka, addressed all the attendees with a speech in which he emphasized the importance of personal data protection as one of the EU's achievements and highlighted the exceptional contribution of Feralis Center in promoting these values.
The next session featured a lecture by Ines Krečak, a Data Protection Professional at Feralis Center, on the fundamental requirements that the principles of personal data processing under GDPR impose on organizations. She went through the most common examples in practice that Feralis Center has encountered in its work with various sectors, companies, and organizations.
Bernard Vukelić, PhD, an assistant professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Rijeka, delivered an interesting lecture on common phishing attacks as a form of social engineering. Participants were particularly drawn to the presentation of innovative and sophisticated software that companies and organizations can use to test the permeability and vulnerability of their systems in situations where they are exposed to such attacks.
During the central part of #DPOconference2022, a panel discussion #openTalks was held on the topic "Challenges in the work of data protection officers," which attracted great interest from all participants of the education, external collaborators of Feralis Privacy Center, and the Director of the Agency for Personal Data Protection, Mr. Zdravko Vukić.
In the panel discussion, participants could learn firsthand about the experiences encountered by data protection officers from reputable companies in various market sectors, as well as from the position of an external data protection officer. The following individuals participated in the panel discussion: Iva Žižak - DPO HEP elektra d.o.o., Marijana Jurjević - DPO Allianz Hrvatska d.d., and Mislav Džeko - DPO JYSK Hrvatska. Danijel Antonić, the CISO of the City of Rijeka and a member of the ISAC Cities for Europe core team, spoke about how GDPR has contributed to the importance of information security and to what extent. Marko Krečak, DPO of Feralis Privacy Center, shared his direct years of experience, highlighting additional business skills that significantly enhance the successful implementation of GDPR within organizations and companies. Aleksandar Puh, DPO of "GDPR Istra," emphasized the peculiarities of the work of an external data protection officer, while Adela Krivanek-Magerl, the president of the Croatian Order of Private Detectives, highlighted the important role of GDPR and Feralis Privacy Center in the e-consultation on the design of a detective identification card.
After the panel discussion, Zdravko Vukić, director of the Agency for Personal Data Protection - AZOP, addressed the attendees with a speech in which he presented interesting and very representative data on the work of the Agency, highlighting activities such as the Twinning program in North Macedonia and the ARC program, as well as upcoming activities aimed at raising awareness and the importance of personal data protection among citizens.
Following the first part of the #DPOconference2022, a reception was held in the winter garden of the Grand Hotel Bonavia where attendees could socialize and enjoy specialties such as Istrian pork with artichoke cream, gravlax salmon with lime cream, calamari salad, and other savory and sweet bites along with warm and cold beverages.
The second part of the #DPOconference began with a very interesting and extremely useful lecture by lawyer Aleksandar Puh on personal data breaches and compensation, followed by a lecture from Dunja Kosa, a legal advisor at the Feralis Center, on the compliance of video surveillance with GDPR. The last lecture was held by Ines Krečak, a Data Protection Professional at the Feralis Center, on aligning certain activities with GDPR requirements when it comes to marketing and employment relationships.
At the end of the education program, all participants received gifts from the Feralis Center, and certificates of attendance are being prepared and will be delivered to the participants.
The #DPOconference was hosted and moderated by Mirjana Marohnić, the head of Channel Ri, with media coverage provided by HRT and Novi List. Cotrugli Business School provided support for the education program.
The presence of high-level guests, expert external collaborators of the Feralis Center, the positive atmosphere of the attendees, diverse program, and pleasant reception at the Grand Hotel Bonavia added value to the entire event and made it a useful experience for all participants.
